HMIWI Services and Technical Support

Medical Waste Combustors in the United States must meet new stringent operating and emission requirements.  The law is often referred to as HMIWI, which stands for "Hospital, Medical and Infectious Waste Incinerators".

Many facilities presently own medical waste incinerators that provide good service (both economically and environmentally) to the hospital and community where they are located.  Basic Envirotech Inc. has experience and expertise in designing, supplying and upgrading existing systems that meet the new requirements.  Call us today to discuss your application.

We are positioned to provide consulting engineering and advice to facilities trying to determine if an upgrade project is feasible.  In addition, we can provide hardware, software and other services to the facility that decides to continue operation within the new HMIWI requirements.

The US-EPA has directed the States to adopt new guidelines and emission limits for medical waste incinerators. Some states are adopting the federal rules verbatim, others are drafting rules specific to their state. All new HMIWI state rules tighten requirements on the operation and administration of medical waste generating and treatment facilities.  And the time frame for compliance is very short. What can we expect from the new rules? A good chance for improving our environment, for sure. But, expect much higher prices on alternate treatment options, too!

We can help you meet the new rules with these services:

Evaluate your existing systems and determine a compliance plan and budget.
Title V permit application or renewal.
Operator training and certification programs.
Direct the development of a site-specific Waste Management Plan.
Equipment annual inspections and reports.
Tune up your existing equipment for optimal performance.
Organize performance testing to demonstrate compliance with emission limits.

We design and provide equipment and systems needed for compliance:

Upgrades and repairs to existing combustion equipment.
Completely-Dry Acid Gas Scrubbers.
Instrumentation for measuring Operating Parameter Values.
Data monitoring, recording and reporting systems.
Upgrade control systems to incorporate all the above, including the requirements for maintaining system documentation and training records on site.

A summary of the Federal requirements can be found under the heading HMIWI Compliance.
